Becoming a Volunteer

Terrance Blunden

The Needles Battery almost always requires volunteer helpers. The tasks are many and varied and include; painting and DIY, ticket selling, membership recruiting, conducting school tours or talking to visitors about the history of the Battery. Some of the posts are seasonal but they can be the year round. No qualifications are required but it is essential you enjoy working with others and talking to visitors. To make inquiries about becoming a volunteer at the Battery, or elsewhere on the Isle of Wight, please use the links on the "Contact Us" page.

Whilst working for the National Trust you are protected by their employee liability insurance and their health and safety policies and procedures, training will be given if required. You will not be paid for the time you give but reasonable travel expenses are paid to and from your place of work. As a volunteer you are entitled to free admission to all National Trust sites and a twenty percent discount in National Trust shops if you work for fifty hours in a year.

Nationally the National Trust cares for over 248,000 hectares (612,000 acres) of beautiful countryside in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, plus almost 600 miles of coastline and more than 200 buildings. It has almost 4,000 regular staff and about the same number of seasonal staff. In addition there are 38,000 volunteers who contribute over 2 million hours of their valuable spare time each year. In spite of what appears to be a large number of volunteers the National Trust is alway seeking new recruits. Of particular interest are volunteers with professional qualifications, for example PAT electrical testing or surveying.
